NobelActive vs NobelReplace CC: are the restorative parts the same?

Labs ask this constantly: the patient has a NobelReplace CC implant, the stock drawer has NobelActive parts — can they be used? Short answer: yes, within the same platform. Both systems are built on the same interface, the Nobel Biocare Conical Connection (CC): an internal cone with a hexagonal index.

That is why abutment manufacturers often list components for both systems under a single «Nobel CC» label without splitting them into Active and Replace.

Where compatibility ends

The key word is platform. Conical Connection comes in NP (Narrow Platform) and RP (Regular Platform). An NP abutment will not seat on an RP implant and vice versa — the cone and index geometry differ. So the rule is simple: NobelActive NP ↔ NobelReplace CC NP, NobelActive RP ↔ NobelReplace CC RP.

The important exception is the classic NobelReplace without the CC suffix. That older line uses the tri-channel (trilobe) connection and is completely incompatible with conical prosthetics. If the chart just says «NobelReplace», find out first which version it is: tri-channel or Conical Connection.

Also do not confuse CC with the Brånemark System — that one is an external hex, a third, separate Nobel standard.

What this means in exocad

In exocad libraries the interface is usually listed as Nobel Biocare CC with a platform choice of NP or RP. One installed library covers both NobelActive and NobelReplace CC — you do not need separate files per system.

When picking a Ti-base, check two parameters: platform (NP/RP) and gingival height. Original and compatible bases (Medentika, NT-Trading, Dess and others) replicate the CC cone geometry.

How to verify in practice

One final safety rule: prosthetic compatibility is confirmed by the abutment manufacturer's documentation. The CAD library handles geometry in your project; clinical use is on the component manufacturer.
