Common CAD Library Installation Errors and How to Avoid Them

Installing a CAD library looks simple: unpack the archive, copy it to the right folder, done. In practice, dental technicians and clinicians regularly find that the library does not appear in the system list, the project will not open, or the scan body is not recognized. In 90% of cases, the cause is one of four typical mistakes. Let's go through each of them and show how to avoid the problem.

2Unzip

Mistake 1: wrong installation path

Each CAD system expects libraries in a strictly defined directory. For exocad it is usually DentalCADApp\library\implant, for 3Shape Dental System — C:\ProgramData\3Shape\Implant Library, for Medit Design — its own user folder. If you drop the files into Program Files, on the desktop, or into a random folder, the software simply will not see them.

Before installing, check the documentation or the config file and verify the path. In exocad it helps to look at settings-defaults.xml, which contains the base directory. In 3Shape the path is visible in the Dental System Control Panel. If you have several versions installed, make sure you copy into the active one.

Mistake 2: nested folders after unpacking

Library archives often unpack with duplicated nesting: implant\implant\Manufacturer\... instead of implant\Manufacturer\.... As a result, the CAD software cannot find the configuration files (.xml, .constructionInfo, .dme) at the expected nesting depth.

The rule is simple: inside the target folder you should immediately see manufacturer files or a folder named after the implant system — not another level with the same name. Open the folder and check the structure visually. If you see a duplicate, move the contents one level up.

Mistake 3: skipping the application restart

CAD systems scan libraries only at startup. If you copy files while exocad DentalCAD, 3Shape Dental Designer, or Medit Design is open, the new entries will not appear in the dropdowns until the application is fully closed and launched again.

It is important to close not only the main window but all background services. In 3Shape this means the Dental System Control Panel and related processes — sometimes it is easier to reboot the PC. In exocad it is enough to close DentalCADApp.exe and confirm the process is gone from Task Manager.

Mistake 4: library and CAD version mismatch

Implant manufacturers release libraries for specific CAD versions. A library built for exocad 3.0 Galway may not open or may misbehave in 2.4 Plovdiv — and vice versa. The same applies to 3Shape: libraries for the 2023 release are not always compatible with 2021.

Before installing, always check your CAD version against the version stated in the archive name or readme. If the required version is not publicly available, look for an alternative release from the same manufacturer or contact the supplier. Do not try to force a new-version library into an older CAD — this leads to abutment fit calculation errors.

Pre-flight checklist

1. The install path matches what is set in the CAD configuration. 2. There is no extra nesting inside the target folder. 3. The application has been fully restarted after copying. 4. The library version matches the CAD version. 5. In a new order, the required manufacturer and system appear in the implant list.

If even one point is missing, problems are almost guaranteed. This quick check saves hours of rework and support calls.
